Statement of Purpose (SOP)
IMPORTANT
The applicant (you) will need to address each of the criteria listed as authentically as possible. The SOP forms part
of your complete application for admission to USC. If the application is approved by USC, the approved SOP must
be supplied to the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) by the student/agent at the point of Student visa application,
to assist the applicant in demonstrating that they will be able to satisfy the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)
requirement.
USC REQUIREMENTS
1. Prior to writing the SOP you must have read and understood:
o DoHA’s Student visa requirements, including that of being a GTE
o Ministerial Direction 69, which sets out key factors DoHA considers when assessing the GTE
requirement
2. SOPs must be typed by the applicant
3. SOPs must address all criteria outlined below
4. SOPs must be a maximum of three A4 pages with a font size of at least 11
CRITERIA
The SOP must contain information about:
the USC program and campus/location you have applied for and why
the research you have conducted into studying in Australia instead of studying in your home country or
elsewhere
a brief outline of your education history and the relevance it has
to your selected academic program
to your future career plans
your expected return on investment, that is how you expect your future employment circumstances and
remuneration levels to improve upon successful completion of your chosen USC program
include reference to a current advertised position in your chosen field, e.g. newspaper article
your planned living arrangements while studying at USC, including the suburbs you have researched, the type
of accommodation, the expected rental costs, and where you found this information
a brief outline of how you plan to cover your tuition and living expenses with reference to your USC Summary
of Funds document
your personal ties to your home country
include authentic reasons for returning to your home country after you complete your studies
If applicable, the SOP must:
clearly explain any gaps of one year or more in your academic and/or employment history
outline your and/or your spouse’s immigration history and provide evidence of any previous international travel
undertaken
including associated visa grants for any country, and state whether you complied with the specific
conditions of each visa
disclose any previous visa refusals or cancellations you and/or your spouse have received fo
