Choose any one of the short stories in the Module 3 folder. Write a stand-alone literary analysis paragraph
(approximately 200 – 250 words) in which you develop an argument about the story based on any single
element of literature (setting, conflict, a single character analysis, etc.). The elements of literature are listed
in “Analyzing Short Stories and Novels” (located in Module 2). Be sure to review Ten Tips for Writing about
Literature and Integrating Quotations in Literary Analysis before you begin, and apply these conventions in
your writing.
Additional Directions:
Identify the author, genre, and title of the short story in your topic sentence. (Always place short story titles
in quotation marks).
Include the four components of analysis (assertions, textual evidence, explanations, and significance) in
the paragraph.
Use the literary present tense as appropriate.
Upload your paragraph as a Microsoft Word document (or a PDF file if your computer doesn’t support
Word).
