Introduction
In Chapter 7 we learned about three types of storage devices, magnetic disks, optical disks, and solid state memory. We will run into all three in the
workplace, each having their own advantages. The magnetic disk has advanced to spin faster and transfer data at a higher rate. Let’s do a little research to
see what today’s magnetic disks look like.
Activity Instructions
One Page Report: To simplify our explanations about magnetic disk access speeds, in Chapter 7 we used rotation speeds of 3,600 rpm and sustained data
transfer rates on the order of one megabyte per second. However, current technology has pushed those numbers higher. Research current rotation speeds
and data transfer rates for magnetic disks. Cite your sources, dates of the published research, and the type of computer (laptop, desktop, and so on) that
uses the disk.
Tips for Success
Research your own magnetic disk at home or on a work computer if you have one. What is the rotation speed and transfer rate? How does it compare to the
new ones on the market? Feel free to include these facts in your report. Pictures and graphs are always welcome as well.
