Objective: Students will explore their culture, beliefs, attitudes, values and reflect upon how to develop cultural intelligence (also known as cultural
competence).
Instructions: Using the template provided in Canvas (below), write a 3–5 page APA style (7th Ed., Student format) narrative paper that answers the following
questions:
Part 1: My culture (about .5–one page)
Briefly describe the cultures to which you belong, including the specific communities with which you identify (e.g., race, ethnicity, religion, language, gender,
sex, sexuality, etc.). Use Hofstede’s dimensions—described in the textbook (pp. 352–354) and Hofstede Insights—as a framework to provide you with the
appropriate vocabulary.
Part 2: Prejudices, biases, and display rules (one to two pages)
Discrimination can take various forms of dehumanization based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, education level, country of origin,
and so on.
What stereotypes (biases, prejudices and display rules) are present in your culture generally, and not necessarily for you personally? Discuss stereotypes (1)
from the perspective of your in-group toward its members, (2) toward the out-group, and (3) from the out-group toward your in-group. In other words, how do
you perceive yourselves, how do you perceive others, and how do others perceive you?
Part 3: Developing cultural competence (two pages)
My approach toward another culture (one page)
Interpret and reflect on your scores from the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy. What do you think has influenced your ratings?
Regardless of how open we think we are, everyone has stereotypes. We all have areas of improvement, despite how open we are to other cultures. Take
some time for honest self-reflection.. What beliefs, attitudes, and/or values drive biases that hinder your acceptance of others? Identify and describe at least
one concrete stereotype you have toward another group of people.
What steps can you take to address your own biases, stereotypes, prejudices, etc.? Provide specific examples.
Increasing cultural intelligence (one page)
Using psychological research to support your response, propose what steps and strategies could be implemented at a community level to promote cultural
intelligence. Include one peer-reviewed research article/study that provides examples of some steps or strategies for reducing biases and increasing cultural
competence. This article or study should not be a reference to a website, rather to a published journal article.
Paper Requirements
At least three to five pages for the body of the paper. The total paper length, including title page and reference page should be at least five to seven pages.
General guidelines for length are detailed above, but feel free to expand any of these sections.
Cite two sources. One source must be a peer-reviewed journal article that applies to the “Developing Cultural Competence” section, while the other source
may be your textbook, required article readings, or another scientific journal article.
