Research Statement (20 pts: 1 page): Write research hypothesis(ses)/question(s) regarding your topic. The
literature review is the introductory review part to shape your research theme in the research statement.
Thus, the literature review generally connects to the research statement very well. How to shape your
hypothesis/question has been introduced chapters 1 and 5.
See the studies below to review how the studies wrote their research statements.
-On p. 5 first and second paragraph, Jackson et al. (2009) attempted to argue their main research theme.
-Skogan (2015) shaped his research focus on pp. 471-472: “There has been relatively little research on . . .
are often victims of these behaviors.”
– Zhao, Lawton, & Longmire (2015) shaped their research statement on p. 26-28: “The Rationale for the
Current Study.”
Method
(Method will have three sub-parts: Sample, Measures, and Procedure).
Sample (20 pts: 1-2 pages): Describe your sampling that you would like to conduct research. Sampling
heavily depends on a proposal topic. Here, you will explain a study sample, data, or participants of a study.
Is your sample group a student body? Correctional population? Residents? Police officers? How to
describe a sample and different sampling methods are well explained in chapter 8.
See the studies below to review how they explained their samples.
-Under Study 1 (p. 6) and Study 2 (p. 8) in Jackson, Bradford, Hohl, and Farrall (2009).
-Madon (2018) explained the study’s data in Sample under Method on p. 125.
-The first paragraph of Data under Method (p. 28) in Zhao et al. (2015).
Measures & Procedure (20 pts: 2-3 pages): Describe your measures; It relates to operationalization (read
chapters 1 and 5). Specifically explain how you will measure variables. For instance, if you want to
measure “fear of crime,” how will you assess this “fear of crime” concept and make it objectively? In here,
students must explain dependent and independent variables. See the studies below to see how they explained the dependent and independent variables.
-On pp. 125-125 in Madon (2018).
-On pp. 128-131 in Zhao et al. (2015).
Describe procedure as well. In other words, describe how you will collect your sample/data/study group.
Are you using survey? (chapter 9) Are you going to do qualitative Interviewing? (chapter 10) Or
observation? (chapter 11). If you use either survey (chapter 9) or interview (chapter 10). Explain the
procedure how you will conduct survey or interview toward a sample group of your study. Few students
used observations. But, if you use the observation method, which is chapter 11, You need to describe very
details regarding observation methods and rationale. Have you found any similar approach in previous
research about it? Then, you can cite that study when you design your observation. And these studies
should be introduced in the literature review.
See the studies below to review how they wrote their procedure of their studies.
-On p. 125 by Madon (2018), under Sample, “Using computer-assisted telephone interviewing . . . reflect
the larger Canadian population” is about the procedure of this study.
-On pp. 477-478, “Methodological work on . . . the two approaches (cited),” Skogan (2015) explained the
procedure of this research.
-Data under Method (p. 28) in Zhao et al. (2015) explained procedure as well with an explanation about the
sample.
Discussion
After you wrote the previous parts, take time to reflect the followings (20 pts: 3-5 pages):
-Any weakness or strength of your proposal.
-What are limitations of your proposal?
-How does your proposal contribute to the existing studies regarding a topic?
-What can be a policy implication?
-If you will conduct this research based on a proposal, will it solve an issue? If so, how?
In sum, students must step forward to further reflect your proposal to suggest any possible outcomes,
which can be positive or negative.
See the studies below as examples. Based on your discretion, you can make sub-titles, e.g., implication,
limitations, etc.
-On p. 10 “Implication for policy” in Jackson et al. (2009)On p. 130 “Limitation and future research” in Madon (2018), the author wrote study’s limitation and future
implication.
-On p. 481, Skogan (2015) wrote the uniqueness/strength of his study.
-On pp.25-26, “It is important to note that, . . . and should be highlighted.” Zhao et al. (2015) wrote the
strength of their research.
