For your culminating experience of the e-thos seminar, you are asked to reflect on each of the previous modules, the decision that resulted in this seminar as
a sanction, and how you plan to make future decisions.
We are not looking for any particular answers or correct way to present your reflections on this seminar. Rather, we are asking for genuine reflection and
honesty in your responses (we will not judge nor will there be any repercussions).
As personal reflection is a time-intensive activity, this project will take a considerable amount of time, likely several hours over several days. Of course, this
varies with each person. You should not expect, however, to be able to rush through this activity without giving it significant thought. Please give this project
your full attention.
This activity has 2 parts.
Part 1: The Emperor’s Club
View the movie The Emperor’s Club. Unfortunately the movie is not available free via the internet, but you can get it via interlibrary loan through the UMD
library system or rent the movie from a local video rental establishment or Netflix.
Part 2: Electronic Portfolio/Creative Project
You will produce an electronic portfolio or other creative project (e.g., video, song, story/literary essay, artistic endeavor) as a personal reflection on your
experiences participating in this seminar. Feel free to incorporate symbols, media clips (movies, songs, TV shows, etc.), art, etc. into your portfolio. Please
make reference to the previous modules, readings, and The Emperor’s Club.
Although you are asked to think about your past decision-making in this activity, the portfolio should be future- oriented. The movie you watched and the
readings on happiness are intended to help you frame the portfolio in a forward-thinking way.
The over-arching concepts to address in the portfolio are:
1. What is happiness and/or a “good life” to you?
2. Choose one of the following quotations used in The Emperor’s Club upon which to reflect
a. “A man’s character is his fate.” – Heraclitus
b. “It is not living that is important but living rightly.” – Socrates
c. “The end depends upon the beginning.” – the school motto from the movie
In addition, in this portfolio/project, please address the following questions. You may also address any other issues or questions that you choose.
What have been the most meaningful concepts or experiences within this seminar,
What is your current thinking about the decision you made that resulted in this sanction,

How has your thinking about that decision changed during the course of this seminar,
Looking back over the several months since your decision, how has your decision affected yourself and
various others,
How will you incorporate what you have learned in this seminar into your daily life and decision-making in the future,
What does it mean to you to be ethical and have integrity and character
You have freedom to create a personal reflection piece of your choosing. However, if you have questions about this
