1. Why was the radical populist alliance successfully constructed in Mexico and why did it endure once
constructed? In your answer, focus on the main actors, their interests, why they coalesced, and what kept
them together over time. You may find it useful to discuss the principal challenges to the radical populist
alliance that made it an unlikely political outcome. Finally, make sure to at least briefly discuss the political
result or “legacy” of the success of the radical populist alliance.
2. In the early 1950s, Mexico managed to overcome economic problems that caused political polarization
and instability in other Latin American countries. The result was “Stabilizing Development” and the
“Mexican Miracle”. What were the PRI’s political resources that allowed the government to bring economic
troubles under control in the 1950s? What were the political results of these successful policies? An answer
to this question would include discussion of Mexico’s economy but would center on the relevant political
themes.
3.Despite Mexico’s technically open electoral arena, opposition parties failed to develop to any important
degree before the 1980s. Why? Why was the PRI electorally dominant? Consider the dominant party’s
multiple resources and how these were used to diminish opposition challenges. Make sure to include
relevant examples that illustrate your argument.
