Instructions: Draw ONLY on chapter 1 from Felix Martin’s Money: The Unauthorized Biography, and also
the four-item list of the functions of money that I presented in the first lecture for this course. Write a
response conforming to the instructions included in the assignment. The total response should be not less
than 5 pages long, and not more than 6 pages long. Citations and paraphrases that you include in your
answer should be followed simply by the name Martin and then the page number from the part of the text
that you are relying on – the name and number to be included in parentheses at the end of your quotation
or paraphrase. The assignment should be double-spaced, and the font size should be 12. There should be
no extra spacing between paragraphs. Put your name at the top right-hand corner of the first page of the
assignment, as well as the course number (Philosophy 2264G), and the title: Assignment 1.
The assignment MUST be uploaded to OWL (as a PDF file) by 5 PM, Monday February 1.
Assignment:
Part A
Briefly explain Adam Smith’s account of the origin and purpose of money, and explain, too, which, of the
four functions of money presented in class, Smith’s account covers, and which functions it doesn’t cover.
Part B
Briefly outline the Irish money crisis described in the section of Chapter 1 in Martin which is called “Money
in an Economy without Banks”, and explain how the Irish managed to keep their economy going without
using actual money, and without simply bartering.
