-Research Oral Health Topic (DUE 5/25/20 @ 8am): This assignment requires that you
choose one oral health topic for a literature review research paper. Choose a topic
that interests you and will advance the dental hygiene profession and the dental hygiene
process of care. The ada.org website provides an A-Z list of clinically relevant, critical,
and emerging issues impacting oral public health and is an excellent place to begin your
search for oral health research topics. Go to the following sites for ideas:
http://www.ada.org/en/member-center/oral-health-topics.
http://www.ada.org/en/science-research/ada-scientific-research.
-Introductory Paragraph and Resources List for Research Paper (DUE 7/6/20 @ 8 AM):
An introductory research paragraph in a literature review paper presents a statement
about the topic to be discussed and two to three key points specific to the topic. It
contains a statement of the topic or specific phenomenon to be explored, the reason it
needs to be examined, and the reason it is a problem or issue. The last sentence will be
your thesis statement. Any citations or material from other sources must be cited in AMA
format. An additional resource page listing all the sources to be used for the final
research paper is to be turned in with the introductory paragraph. The resource page must
be in AMA format. See additional guidelines for the introductory paragraph in the Course
Assignment Packet. The Introductory Research Paragraph Guidelines Rubric is
available through the NYU Classes course site.
-Literature Review Research Paper (DUE 07/30/20 @ 8AM) The literature review
research paper is an individually written paper that explores a problem statement and
relates scientific evidence to clinical practice issues. It explores the current scientific
and/or scholarly knowledge of a topic. For this assignment, the student must find at least
5 scholarly resources on a specific topic relevant to dentistry and/or dental hygiene. After
conducting a search of appropriate databases, the student must choose, evaluate, and
analyze the data, identify current themes, identify weaknesses or gaps in the research, and
present material in support of or against the original thesis statement. See additional
guidelines in the Course Assignment Packet. The Literature Review Research Paper
Rubric is available through the NYU Classes course site.
The paper must be properly cited using credible sources.
Use AMA citation style.
A minimum of 5 references (from reliable professional, peer-reviewed journal
articles) is required. Do not use websites with secondary sources. Only use
websites with original research data such as CDC.gov. Use only 1 textbook
source.
The paper must be a minimum of three pages (not including references or
abstract), double-spaced, typewritten in Times New Roman in size 12 font. Any
papers submitted with incorrect formatting will receive a 5 point deduction from
the final score.
You must submit a 250-word abstract with the paper. An abstract is NOT the
same as an introductory paragraph, and you don't write it until the entire paper is
completed. (For detailed information on how to write an abstract, see
NYUClasses, Resources, Guides for Assignments).
The paper will be graded using a Research Paper Rubric available through NYU
Classes course site.
See the Course Assignment Packet for further detailed information on the
requirements for writing the literature review paper
