The second essay that you write will be another Rogerian argument letter. This time, however, you can write to the second group of annoying people from the very first discussion board assignment (2 Annoyances) or you can write to people who have a differing opinion from yours in the FIRST Controversial Event or Comment discussion board post that you made. If you use the Controversial DB, be sure to speak to the person(s) in your event summary, not to the classmates who might have replied to your event post. (If you are confused, check with me to be sure that you write to the right folks.) Refer back to the Essay #1 description to refresh your memory regarding name calling and tone. Another good item to review is your graded first essay. Other Reminders: The guide for Rogerian argument is in Ch. 6 on page 196. After you review the Rogerian structure guide, examine the essay that begins at the bottom of the same page, “Why Cell Phones Do Not Belong in the Classroom.” If you are not sure how to begin the letter, use the Classical/Traditional argument guide in Ch. 1 (the four pillars of argument—pages 24-27) as a planning tool and then expand and revise from there to include the additional elements that go with Rogerian. You are required to use and cite 3 – 4 different sources in this assignment. One or two sources can help support your viewpoint, and the other(s) can support the viewpoint of the people you’re trying to persuade. Cite the sources BOTH in the paper where you use the material (in-text citation) and in a Works Cited at the end of the paper. Use MLA format. (Even if you use a citation program, you should check its result for correctness.) Do not use more than four sources for this paper. Remember that you are directly addressing the group of folks who annoy you, so include a salutation—a Dear ___ greeting. Do not use To Whom It May Concern or Dear Sir/Madam! Such a greeting is cold and impersonal, and it tells your audience up front that you have no awareness of who they are. Also, be sure to use second-person point of view (you, your, yours) to speak TO your audience instead of ABOUT them. End the letter with a closing (Sincerely, With regards, Affectionately, Love, etc). DO NOT FORGET to label the Common ground and Compromise sections of your letter. You can use color highlighting, boldface, underlining, or actual headings for drawing attention to those specific parts of the essay. Whatever you use should overtly identify the common ground and the compromise so that you and I BOTH see that each one is present and easily located.
