Newsletter Assignment for EDUC 105
To meet PDE and NAEYC standards for the Transfer Checklist for Statewide Program-to-Program articulation in PK-4 for this course, you are to develop an
artifact for your portfolio that addresses Standard 2, “Building Family and Community Relationships.”
The objectives of this standard are:
2a: Knowing about and understanding diverse family and community characteristics
2b: Supporting and empowering families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships
2c: Involving families and communities in their children’s development and learning
Keep a copy of this artifact in your Portfolio. Please see info about your Portfolio binder in the Module.
THE ASSIGNMENT: CREATE A NEWSLETTER
You are to select an age or grade level and develop a newsletter for the parents in your class that will include the following information:
The FORMAT:
2 pages
At least 2 columns per page. I suggest no more than 3.
At least 2 graphics or pictures per page. However, too many graphics are distracting.
Do not leave excessive amounts of blank space especially around the graphics or pictures
Use color
A self-introduction in which you describe your educational background, teaching experience, and approaches to teaching and learning
A list of community resources that they may find helpful as resources for their child, family, or themselves. These are OUTSIDE of the center/school. You
must have at least 4, with contact info. See the files on this module for ideas.
A learning activity you will present that will introduce the children to different cultures. This may focus on language arts, history, music, art, science, or other
curriculum subjects.
You are encouraged to be creative. You may need to make some information up such as where you earned your Bachelor’s Degree if you are in a K-4 setting.
Also, you might find real resources from your school district’s website or from a pre-school you know about or for whom you work.
Many newsletter templates are available on the Web. I suggest you search for ones with educational formatting. For students taking the course in an online
format, just be sure that the template can be uploaded to Canvas. Word has some very basic templates that can be easily modified. Do NOT use Publisher or
some other publishing product. Canvas does not work with those products.
