HS 312: Mental Health and Addictions
Purpose of this assignment:
Students will develop an understanding of the effects of co-occurring
disorders. This topic should be at least ONE (1)mental health disorder and
at least ONE (1) substance use disorder that co-occur. Students will
examine the statistics and demographics of these co-occurring disorders.
Students will need to understand how to screen and assess the cooccurring disorder, treatment modalities, and other forms of treatment that
are effective in treating the co-occurring disorder and identify referral
sources for this co-occurring disorder. Also, students will reflect on their
learning process about the co-occurring disorder and how they will utilize
the information found in their own personal and professional development.
Students can work individually, or students can work in a group on
this presentation. EACH student will need to submit the PowerPoint for the
final project. Please read the assignment now! Start thinking about what
topic you want to work on and who you want to work with. Project ideas
and names of people who want to work together (working in a group of 2-3
people is optional) are due in the first half of the semester, and the project
is expected near the end of the semester.
The co-occurring disorders presentation and handout will be posted on a
discussion board. You will receive two grades: One for the presentation
and handout (100pts), and the other will be the grade for the discussion
forum (40pts).
Students will submit their topic ideas earlier in the semester to be
approved by the instructor and to receive feedback.
Instructions:
• Students will present 20 project slides minimum (this does not include
the title page or reference page.)
• Follow APA format and should be free from grammatical mistakes.
• Should clearly and thoroughly address:
o Defines and examines the co-occurring disorder
o Treatment and Relapse Prevention
o Assessment and Screening Instruments
o Reflection on Personal and Professional Development
• Prepare a one-page handout
o The handout is a one-page professional handout. It can be in
the form of a flyer, brochure, etc. It is material that is accurate,
eye-catching, creative, and done professionally. You can think
about it as being similar to the information you may see in a
waiting room.
• Prepare at least one discussion question
o The discussion question should be able to facilitate a good
discussion. However, it should not be so controversial that the
conversation gets heated or out of hand. A good discussion
question or open-ended question also does not just yield a
simple yes or no response. If the answer is “yes” or “no,” then
the person should have to explain their stance.
o The discussion question should also not just answer a question
about the information you presented in your slide, such as
“What was the percentage of poverty in Kansas?” This kind of
question would not generate a good discussion.
