Discussion: Leadership Strategy
As a nurse, you serve an important role in identifying strategies to effectively manage health care
resources and in leading health care quality improvement. You must be able to decide what leadership
style or strategy to apply in a given situation to achieve an effective resolution of the issue. Read the
following two scenarios and select one to focus on in this Discussion. Consider the leadership style or
strategy that might be most effective in the scenario you selected.
Scenario 1
You work in a for-profit nursing home, with about 100 beds, on a 20-bed unit that is largely patients with
Alzheimer’s disease. Your patient mix is predominantly Medicare and Medicaid patients. Your nursing home
is part of a larger system that includes a major medical center, as well as VNA, outpatient dialysis, and a
fully integrated network. Your nurse manager is getting feedback from the hospital that your nursing home
is sending too many patients to the ED who really don’t need to go. How would you go about figuring out
what could be done at the nursing home to prevent avoidable ED visits?
Scenario 2
You’ve been associated with an outpatient cardiology clinic that is part of a large academic medical center.
Your patients are mostly charity care and managed Medicaid. Most have a prescription plan, but none have
amily doctor” and use the clinic (and the ED) regularly. Most are unfamiliar with their medications and do
not have the resources for care coordination in their family/social network. About 25 CHF patients have
been “lovingly,” but inappropriately, called “frequent fliers” because of their inability to manage their own
care, their frequent visits to the ED, and their “one night stays” paid at the observation rate. As a staff nurse
in this clinic, describe the strategies you could devise for you and your fellow staff nurses targeting these
25 patients. Find at least one article from the professional literature to corroborate your recommendations.
By Day 3
Select one of the scenarios, and post the following:
Describe the most appropriate leadership style and/or strategy to apply in the scenario you chose in order
to implement the recommendations successfully. Justify your selection.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be
written at the capstone level (see checklist)
Notes Initial Post: This should be a 3-paragraph response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and
include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional
material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own
writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old). (Refer to AWE
Checklist, Capstone)
APA Tips

APA Tips:
*Here are some important tips for your upcoming assignments:
*Remember, all resources should be written within the last 5 years.
*Use scholarly resources. Websites can be scholarly, but not all are. Try .gov or .org websites for more
reliable information. Avoid websites where you cannot verify the year of publication, the author, etc.
*Use headings. They are your friends! They show instructors (and all readers) what you are covering for
that very paragraph or two.
*The writing center has some GREAT resources. Here is the link:

*Use rubrics as checklists to make sure you have covered everything.
Below are the most common issues I have found in APA formatting in my classrooms. I hope these help
you in your journey!
Rearranging authors to be in alphabetical order Do not rearrange the authors of individual works in
alphabetical order. The authors for each book are in the order they intended when the piece was published.
No citations, but references References and citations go hand in hand. You cannot have one without
another. If you put a reference at the end of your work, it would indicate none of the writing was original and
it was all taken from your source.
Direct quotations citations with no page numbers When directly quoting an author(s), make sure you use
page numbers in your citation. If page numbers are not available, you may use paragraph numbers.
i.e.: “This is an example of a direct quote from Prof. Saucier” (Saucier, 2019, p.1).
Paraphrased citations with page numbers When paraphrasing (leaving only approximately three words
from the originally sourced materials), you do NOT need page numbers. Your citation should look like this:
(Saucier, 2019).
Punctuation precedes the citation Your punctuation should follow the citation, not precede it.
WRONG:
Prof. Saucier mentioned this was an important aspect of APA formatting. (Saucier, 2019) I will review my
APA manual for further assistance.
CORRECT:
Prof. Saucier mentioned this was an important aspect of APA formatting (Saucier, 2019). I will review my
APA manual for further assistance.Journal Citation Author’s Last Name, First Initial. (Year of publication- no month of day). Title of the journal
article: Notice each first letter is not capitalized. Journal Name, Volume number (issue number), page
numbers.
Example:
Saucier, T. (2017). Title of the journal: Here are my thoughts. Fake Journal, 3(2), 3-5.
The italicized 3 is the volume number. The parentheses 2 is the issue number, and 3-5 are the page
numbers.
Three or more authors When you have three or more authors, list the first author followed by the phrase et
al.
Example:
Teaching is very fun (Saucier et al., 2019)
