Global Society
Research Article Paper
For this phase, you’ll consult the TWO research articles/books/book chapters BELOW – The Green Revolution in Jordan – related to globalization that (2) has affected the selected country.
Based on the following reference:
Elmusa, Sharif. “A harvest of technology: the super-Green Revolution in the Jordan Valley”. Washington: Georgetown University. 1994.
This book discusses how the super-green revolution occurred in Jordan and its impact on activities within the Jordan Valley. It covers the various new cultivation methods that marked the super-green revolution, including the use of drip irrigation and greenhouses (Elmusa, 24), and how these processes impacted the ability of Jordan to produce sufficient food using western technologies. The author discusses how the super green revolution affected labor, income distribution and most importantly land ownership in the Jordan Valley. At the end of the book Elmusa focuses on how different technologies impacted the Jordan Valley and ranked them accordingly (Elmusa, 218).
Schyns Joep, Arwa Hamaideh, Arjen Hoekstra, Mesfin Mekonnen, and Marlou Schyns. “Mitigating the Risk of Extreme Water Scarcity and Dependency: The Case of Jordan. Water, 7.10 (2015), 5705-5730.
The authors address the increasing water pollution and scarcity in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as a product of the high dependency on the external water sources through commerce and the conflict over the trans-boundary water resources. According to the assessment, Jordan depends on international water import to supply 86% of the nation’s water demand. The authors develop various strategies that will be useful in controlling the water scarcity and pollution in the region. They include dams for the seasonal management of water, a Disi Water Conveyance Project, desalination, reuse and treatment of water, productive utilization of precipitation and water harvesting, reducing the demand for water per unit, amongst others. The study emphasizes the severity of the water pollution and scarcity condition in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to encourage the formulation of sustainability projects and policies (Schyns, Hamaideh, Hoekstra, Mekonnen, and Schyns 5720).
Your paper should contain three sections:
Introduction (One paragraph)
In your introduction, indicate the country and topic you chose to explore, and why. Also indicate how you went about doing so (for example, consulted 2 research articles, book chapters, etc.) And briefly, in no more than a few sentences, indicate what the sources are about.
Body (About six to eight paragraphs) In one to two paragraphs, provide a definition of your topic. If your topic is development in Brazil, what does “development” mean? Do not use a dictionary. Your definition should have an academic source. If the sources you consulted do not define the topic, search for a definition in another academic source (scholarly article, book, or textbook.) If you use a source other than your research articles, be sure to cite it using in-text citations AND by including it in your bibliography. How is development related to globalization generally? Or what implications might development have for global citizenship?
Then in about four to six paragraphs do the following:
1. Where applicable, identify research questions in each article. That is, what did the authors set out to learn? [Usually, research questions may be found in the first two or so pages of an article.]/Alternatively (that is, if there are no research questions, what is the thesis of each article/source? See the attached research article on which I have highlighted sections as examples of thesis statements and research questions.
2. Summary of literature review: What references do authors make to previous research on this topic? Summarize previous research findings as described in each literature review. See the attached article for an example of a literature review.
3. Identify the research findings of your articles/sources. That is, what are the new research findings described by each source? What do your sources say about the topic/issue? What do they say about how the topic/issue has affected your country? How have citizens’ lives been affected? What conclusions are drawn?
4. Indicate whether these findings/conclusions made by the authors support any of the three perspectives of the nature of globalization (skeptics, hyperglobalizers, transformationalists) discussed at the start of the course, is/are reflected in research questions. Which? How so?
Conclusion (One paragraph)
What are your closing thoughts about the information you found? What do those findings tell you about the nature of globalization? [For example, did you find that globalization has involved policies that have led to or hindered development in the country you chose? Or perhaps what you learned tells you that globalization has both negative (say what they are) and positive (indicate them as well) consequences.] You may also indicate what your findings suggest about global citizenship or how a global citizen might respond to what you found.
You must, of course, properly document your sources, using BOTH in-text citations and a bibliography. You may use any citation format (MLA). Guidelines for all citation styles are available on the Internet. DO NOT include annotations written above in this bibliography. DO NOT simply rely on citation programs. Ensure all publication (journal, date of publication) information is present.
NOTE: Be very careful to avoid plagiarism. One way to do so is to properly document your sources.
Your paper should be 3-4 pages (excluding the bibliography), typewritten, double-spaced, use 12-point font, in Microsoft Word format (only).
Learning objectives
1. Learn about another country
2. Learn how some aspect of globalization has affected another country.
3. Learn how to find appropriate and credible sources
4. Learn how to conduct proper documentation of sources (including in-text citations, bibliography, following a specific style guide, etc.)
5. Identify research questions and their place in scholarly research
6. Identify a literature review and its role in a scholarly article.
7. Identify and summarize research findings.
