The paper will be 6 pages double spaced, twelve-point Times font, with standard margins and footnotes
citing any materials (in Chicago Manual of Style)
1. When did the exhibition take place? Who was the curator? Who was the artist involved (only include a
history about Gaston Lachaise that is relevant to the exhibition)
A little bit of information I have collected:
The name of the exhibition is Gaston Lachaise: Retrospective Exhibition. The curator was Lincoln Kirstein.
This exhibition took place from January 28th to March 7th in 1935. The featured artist was Gaston
Lachaise. When discussing the history of Gaston Lachaise, consider talking about how he used his wife as
inspiration and how he went against his mentor’s style.
2. What is the curatorial conception? (What did Lincoln Kirsten think about this exhibition — convey and
assess this) How is the artist and his/her work interpreted? Basically, you want to give a conceptual
overview of the exhibition.
3. What did the show look like? How was it designed? What were the standout art works? Here, you will be
using the photo installments on MoMA’s website to try to recreate the show in the readers mind. It’s all
about placing your reader visually in the exhibition space through words.
4. How was the show received by the public and by critics? Can you track down some reviews in a
newspaper or magazine?
5. Lastly, give your overall assessment of the exhibition. Does it succeed? If so, how and why? If not, how
and why? Here you get to give your subjective take on the show–hopefully you will use what you have
learned over the semester about Early 20th Century Art in Europe and the United States to make a
discerning judgment.
You will also need to discuss your opinion about the following works by Gaston Lachaise (Pictures of these
works can be found in the catalog):
1. Standing Woman (1912-1927)
2. Floating Woman (1927)
3. Woman (Acrobat) (1929)
4. Reclining Woman (1928-1931)
Questions to Consider When Writing This Essay:
How does this play into body positivity in today’s climate?
Was this exhibition influenced by primitivism?
Do any issues of race, gender, or sexuality come up?
