Directions: In the unit A Great City Educates we have studied writers who explore their ideas about education. Write a 3 page essay (double spaced) on your own ideas about education. The title of your essay should be Toward a Philosophy of Education. Your essay should include the following:
A brief introduction in which you discuss what you thought about school, education and learning before this semester began.
Choose at least three of the topics below. Discuss your views about each topic and explain how specific ideas in the assignments influenced, changed or deepened your thinking on each topic. You are also encouraged to read other texts on the topics and refer to ideas that have changed or shaped your thinking. (Be sure to identify these texts.) You may want to use examples from your own experience to illustrate your ideas. In addition, try to find an interesting quotation to intro-duce or emphasize some of your ideas. (Be sure to cite the source of the quotation.)
• the purpose(s) of education (why we should try to become educated; how education improves the lives of individuals and society);
• Impostor syndrome and how it can make people feel excluded from education;
• the most important qualities of a good learner;
• the role of teachers and schools in the learning process;
• the qualities and attributes of an “educated” person;
• how studying the Liberal Arts can help a person to become educated;
• Education and democracy;
• any other topic that you think is important and is related to education in some way.
In your conclusion discuss how you envision or see your own educational future. What goals do you have for your future education? How do you plan to continue your efforts to educate yourself? Be as specific as possible.
