Research question: How has the pandemic effected first generation student’s mental health? Something new about my research is that previous studies have conducted surveys. I intend to do interviews instead.
Sociological Theories: Social structure
1. Summarize and analyze the research that has already been done on your topic. How has the existing work advanced the scholarship on your research question? What questions has it left unanswered? You want to demonstrate that you have a command of the field you are studying but provide only as much detail on prior studies as needed, depending on their importance to the published work on the topic and to your particular study.
2. Make an argument for why your original research makes a contribution to the existing research on your topic. What is new about your research? Are you asking a new question? Using new theories? Examining a new population or using different methods? How will your study advance the scholarship in this area?
3. Discuss the theoretical basis for the research question you are addressing. What theories have been used to explain the concepts and relationships that you are interested in, and which will you examine? Do these theories generate any relevant or possibly even competing hypotheses? Be sure to address the sociological nature of your research.
There are many ways to organize a background section, and no one particular way is correct or incorrect, so long as the reader can follow your logic.
1. Subheadings and transitional sentences will enhance the organization of your literature review. “Walk” your reader through the major points you want to cover.
2. End the literature review with a paragraph describing how your study will advance the scholarship on this topic. If you have specific hypotheses, you may want to list them here.
