MISY 422 Project Requirements
This semester-long course project requires that students identify a real-world
decision-making problem (e.g., a decision problem at Coppin, their work places,
or another organization) and present a solution to support the identified decision
making situation using at least one technique they have learned from this course.
The total possible points for the final project paper are 120 points
The main body of the final project paper should be around six (6) pages in
Microsoft Word (APA format) including the following sections with clear section
titles and subtitles:
1. Decision Making Problem Identification. This section has the same
requirements as the project proposal and is an extension, revision, or
improvement of your project proposal. The following lists the detailed
requirements:
1.1Organization – State the related organization where you identified the
decision-making problem, including the name of the organization, what the
organization does, and your relationship with the organization; if you do not
work at this organization, you need to provide the name and contact
information of a person from whom you have collected information for this
course project. (For example, if you picked a decision-making problem at
Coppin, then Coppin State University will be the organization.)
1.2Specific Organizational Unit – Describe the specific organizational unit
(or department/division) that the decision situation belongs to within the
identified organization, including the position and function of the unit within
the whole organization, the major personnel in this unit, and the general
working process of this unit. If you work in this unit, please also state your
role. (For example, if the specific decision-making problem you picked is
housed within the College of Business at Coppin, then your “specific
organizational unit” will be the College of Business.)
1.3 Problem Statement – Describe the decision-making problem. More
specifically, delineate which decision-making situation of the identified
organizational unit in the above section 1.2, you think, is problematic; what is
(are) the current method(s) of decision making for this situation; and what
are the problems with the current decision making method(s) (e.g., too time consuming, inaccurate information, inaccurate decisions, too costly, etc.) that,
you think, can be improved?
2. Potential Solutions.
2.1 Source of Problem – Describe what caused the problem or problems
identified in section 1.3.
2.2 Recommendations – Describe specifically how the problems can be
addressed or improved. Your recommendations should include at least
one decision support technique learned from the course.
2.3 System Solutions – For your proposed technique(s) or system(s),
what the system inputs will be, how these inputs will be processed, and
what will be the outcome. (For example, for a loan approval system, the
inputs are the customers’ demographic, work related, and/or financial
information. Then, these inputs will be processed (or evaluated) by the
proposed system using a heuristic decision model to see how a customer
satisfies/dissatisfies all the conditions required by a loan; and the outcome
are the decisions: i.e., whether a particular customer is approved for the
loan or not and what the terms of the loan are if approved.)
3. Potential Challenges. What are the potential challenges (e.g., technical,
organizational, social, and cultural, etc.) in order to implement your solutions?
What do you suggest coping with these challenges?
For the project, if you refer to the textbook or other materials/websites, you must
provide the corresponding citations and references accordingly following the APA
format requirements.
Project Draft is optional. As far as you complete the final project paper, you
are not required to submit the project draft; the purpose for you to submit
the project draft is to get feedback from the instructor regarding whether
you are on the right track and whether there are room for improvements. If
you want to get feedback, please submit your project draft by the required
deadline in the syllabus; name your draft paper with a file name of
YourLastName_Project Draft. The draft should be submitted through the
Project Draft link under Project on Blackboard.
For the final project paper, please name your file as YourLastName_Final
Project Paper The final project paper must follow the APA format which should
