U3 Assignment 1: The Sentencing Project
Please navigate to The Sentencing Project website. The Sentencing Project has been working for thirty years to promote reforms in sentencing policy and to advocate for alternatives to incarceration. Originally designed to help educate defense attorneys, the Project now works to bring attention to inequality in the U.S. Criminal Justice system through research, media campaigns, and policy reform. From their website:
“As a result of The Sentencing Project’s research, publications and advocacy, many people know that this country is the world’s leader in incarceration, that one in three young black men is under control of the criminal justice system, that five million Americans can’t vote because of felony convictions, and that thousands of women and children have lost welfare, education and housing benefits as the result of convictions for minor drug offenses. The Sentencing Project is dedicated to changing the way Americans think about crime and punishment.”
Spend some time perusing the Project’s website. Click on the Racial Disparity tab atop the screen and then Featured Stories. You’ll see a few highlighted cases listed. Select one case to review and then address the following points in a Word document. Use APA format for in-text citations, as well as for your references.
1. Who have you identified, and what is particularly compelling about this individual’s story?
2. What specific historical factors have led to what The Project has identified here as a “racial disparity?” In other words, what external factors outside of this individual’s control have contributed to his/her treatment in the U.S. Criminal Justice system?
