Death of salesman:
Essay 2: Video Essay
Concepts from “Hills Like White Elephants” and/or Death of a Salesman in Today’s World Assignment
Based on the cultural, psychological, and sociological issues that “Hills” and Death of a Salesman present, create a brief video reflecting on one or both of these stories. Can you find any common themes in these two seemingly different stories? Do the stories reflect the culture of the times? Are the issues irrelevant or relevant to today? If so, why do these ideas continue decades later?
You may want to focus on issues, such as, communication, dysfunction, marital affairs and their effect on family members, gender inequality, pride, legacies, suicide, or any other issues you feel pertinent to either or both of these stories. Whatever topic you choose, be sure to show its relevance not only in the story or stories but also its relevance in today’s world.
In this assignment, you will develop a video essay that focuses on a concept from the stories “Hills Like White Elephants” and/or the play Death of a Salesman and provide specific examples of how this concept operates (or does not operate) in today’s world. The video should include properly sourced video clips, voice-over narration, visual texts (charts and graphs), and contain an argument regarding how concepts from the stories relate to today’s world. The video essay should be no less than three (3) minutes and no more than five (5) minutes in length.
Audience: The audience for this essay should be people interested in learning more about your specific topic, but unfamiliar with how it’s been discussed or debated in the United States. Your job is to provide extensive historical and rhetorical context for your audience so they are able to understand how people are talking about the topic in the current culture.
Your tone should be relatively formal. You can use humor via videos but need to convey information at the same time. In general, I would suggest viewing the videos listed in iCollege for some potential models on how to capture the correct tone, content, and form for your video. These videos were based on another selection, not your assignment.
Design: In creating your video essay, take advantage of the strengths of video. Utilize charts and graphs when appropriate. Create a voice-over that explains only as much as necessary. The power of video essay is its ability to create visuals that can stand in for text or the spoken word.
