Guidelines:
Please answer the following question in the form of an essay. Your answer should be based on
analysis – NOT a summary – of the class readings lectures and discussions from the entire course. Make
sure you have a clear argument and support all of your claims with evidence
using only sources from the syllabus with parenthetical in-text citations (ex. Bose and Jalal, p.
155). You will be evaluated on the basis of writing style (spelling, grammar, and clarity), textual engagement
(use of sources), and creative interpretation (making an original argument).
Question:
We have explored the civilizations of South Asia from antiquity to the mid-twentieth century in
ways that defy any single, overarching narrative. Pick one of the following themes – religious violence,
economic change, or national identity – and analyze how it emerged, developed, and
connected through three specific historical examples. Conclude by briefly reflecting on how your chosen
theme continues to be relevant in the present era.
