Conversing with Deaf, hard of hearing, and native signers is the best way to improve your ASL skills. However, in order to stay at home and maintain social
distancing you are not expected to attend a public event. Instead you can choose one of the ASL films listed below. Watch the film and type a one page (12
font, double spaced) reflection about the characters, themes, messages, and how the Deaf community is portrayed.
CHOOSE ONE FROM THESE MOVIES:
1) Sweet Nothing In My Ear (2008)
2) The Hammer (2010)
3) No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie
4) Switched At Birth – S02 E09 “Uprising”
5) Born This Way Presents: Deaf Out Loud 2018
6) CODA (2021)
What should your reflection include? It should not be a summary of the film. You may choose to recap the story, but the focus should be on what you learned
about the Deaf community and Deaf culture. Consider what insights you gained by seeing life through Deaf eyes. There are no specific questions to answer
but think about the following suggestions:
What challenges did the Deaf character(s) face?
What advantages did the Deaf character(s) have?
What cultural biases, if any, were presented? Why was there a conflict?
What sort of technologies were used?
What modes of communication did Deaf characters use with others throughout the film? Did they change?
What do you think the filmmakers wanted the audience to learn about Deaf culture?
What new thoughts or ideas did you gain from the film? What new signs did you learn?
How did the film relate to what you’ve learned so far?
