Stage 1b: Annotated Bibliography (APA Format; 03/10)
From the sources you chose in your proposal, please submit an annotated bibliography for each of your sources. You should have at least 2 annotated bibliographies -one for your psychologist’s background, and one for your psychologist’s theory/concept/study.
An annotated bibliography is essentially a bibliographic entry with a summary of the source’s key ideas and argument. It should be about 150 – 200 words for each source. The length of the entry is often linked with the length of the source.
• Summarize the content of the source – be descriptive and specific
• Evaluate the accuracy and validity of the source
• Describe the usefulness of the source
An example is as follows: Journal Article
Bem, S. L. (1981). Gender schema theory: A cognitive account of sex typing. Psychological Review, 88(4), 354–364. Bem proposes gender schema theory to describe the process of gender development. She suggests that sex-typing, which is the process that which males and females are transformed from societal’s norms of masculine and feminine is derived through gender schemas. These schemas are also important to self-concepts. A schema functions to process and cluster new information in a structural and meaningful way. Bem suggests that rather than a single-gender schema, two distinct gender schemas are present to distinguish between male and female attributes which serve to regulate gender in an individual. Through two studies, Bem demonstrates the link between self-concept and gender schema, and how sex-typed individuals identify faster with congruent attributes and slower for incongruent attributes when compared to non-sex-typed individuals. This strong desire to define self-concepts through gender schemas and their cognitive availability can be attributed to biologically based priority over other schemata and society’s demands on the “functional importance of gender dichotomy” (p. 362).
