Read the attached article related to the development of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve, and the negative effects that the Gwich’in claim that will have on the natural environment, animals that live there and their own cultural practices and quality of life.
The article that I provided you with is intentionally brief, as this is a politically charged topic. As part of your assignment, you will do a little bit of further research and read additional articles on your own to learn more about the aspects of this issue that you are most interested in.
The written part of the assignment is fairly simple and straight-forward:
NOTE: For the purposes of this assignment, your personal opinion about this topic is not relevant. The assignment requires you to work with the material studied in this unit, which you can do no matter which side(s) of this issue you come down on.
This is a national issue in that it requires federal action to open the Preserve to drilling. That means that all Americans get a say in this. For the purposes of this exercise, your position is that you want to prevent drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWF). Decide which aspect(s) of the proposed project you are most bothered by. Use the information from this unit to plan two things that you could do, right from where you are now, to work toward your goal of preventing drilling in the ANWF. Why these two things? Why do you think they would work?
