His narrative provides a different perspective on the experiences of slavery, and it is on this point you will be concentrating your essay. I want you to address the question: what makes Solomon Northrup’s experience of slavery so different from others? We know the basic details, but I want you to provide specific examples from the narrative. How does it “tie-in” to what we’ve been studying in this course? How does his narrative/background story contrast with those of other former slaves? Are there any similarities? You don’t need detailed examples from other slave narratives – these can be broader comparisons in events/details. Do you see the connections to this time period? Do you notice any shifts in Solomon’s voice or attitude as the narrative progresses? If so, what do you attribute this “shift” to? Book: 12 Years a Slave. Graymalkin Media, Los Angeles.
